„The Secret Eye of L.A.Y.L.A.H.” by Zero Kama, recorded within 23 days of May 1984 with instruments solely made from human bones and skulls, is being regarded as one of the key albums of the post-industrial genre ‘ritual’. Despite the fact that the album followed a strict occult symbolism (theme of the recording was the cabbalistic meaning of the figure 77 as represented by the words laylah – the Arabian word for night – or the Hebrew word oz – meaning a he-goat), there was a statement in an early Zero Kama document that the music of Zero Kama is not intended to be ritual music, but rather the celebration of the ritual itself, the ritual of life as a sacrifice of will towards the totality of infinite possibilities.
Viewed from a distance of nearly 30 years, Zero Kamas album has proven a timeless beauty and since that time been an important influence to many other bands. A fine selection of contemporary artists with a certain relation to ritual music is contained within this album, and I am deeply touched and honoured by this tribute to my early musical work. Looking back, I see Zero Kamas work as both representative for the general theme of my life’s preoccupation as well as anticipating my later work in art and philosophy. If there is any basic force behind such obscure practices as magic, occultism and even psychoanalysis, then it is the desire to enter deeper levels of consciousness in order to discover the hidden mechanisms which form the basis our perception and creation of reality. To do so, and to make those mechanisms available to the individual will, it is inevitably necessary to transgress fundamental borders. This transgression can be regarded as the true meaning of any ritual, be it in magic, art or the performance of life itself. „The Secret Eye of L.A.Y.L.A.H.” can be regarded as such a ritual of transgression, and it is a pleasure to see the orphic and tantric mysteries of this ritual being carried further by the artists on this remarkable CD. I wish to express my deepest thanks and true felt love to all the people involved in this project. May your wishes forever come true!
