about

2.- Francisco Mariotti – Chullachaqui Inteligencia Artificial Parlo? (1987)

English Version

Francisco Mariotti – Chullachaqui Inteligencia Artificial Parlo? (1987)

This piece belongs to a series of techno sculptures by Mariotti that are special in their use of a software called Chullachaqui, which allows for a random combination of texts to be reproduced through a synthesized voice. Mariotti defined these works as computerpoetry. This chapter of Mariotti’s oeuvre can also be related to what critic Victorio Fagone regards as “technozoomorphic” sculptures. Great Pre-Columbian Macaw (Gran Guacamayo Precolombino, 1992), the last of such works, was created for (and awarded at) an exhibition in Italy marking the 500 years of the arrival of Christopher Columbus to America.
The software was developed by the artist himself and Manuel Rodríguez. Chullachaqui is a Quechua word meaning “uneven foot”, and points to the Amazonian legend of a gnome who deceives the townsfolk and leads them to unknown places.
